Trump Urges Nations to Join Naval Coalition for Strait of Hormuz Security
Trump's Call for Naval Support
President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reiterated his appeal for countries to participate in a proposed naval escort aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz. He expressed disappointment over the lack of enthusiasm from allies regarding this initiative. Trump mentioned that several nations have indicated their willingness to assist in monitoring the strait, yet he criticized their hesitance without specifying which countries he was referring to. He stated, "Some countries are very eager, while others are not. Some of these nations have received our support for many years, protecting them from significant threats, yet they do not seem very enthusiastic. The level of enthusiasm is important to me," during an event held at the White House.
Trump implied that the reluctance of these nations reflects a lack of mutual support from countries that have defense agreements with the United States. He remarked, "We will protect them, but if we ever need assistance, they may not be there for us." When pressed by a reporter about which nations would join the US, he opted not to disclose that information at this time, suggesting that the White House would later provide a list of participating countries.
He has requested that approximately seven nations send warships to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, especially as Iranian attacks have been targeting Gulf nations. The US is currently in discussions with countries that heavily depend on Middle Eastern oil to form a coalition to secure this vital waterway, through which about 20% of the world's oil trade passes. However, European nations are seeking clarity on the duration of the conflict before deciding whether to send warships in support of this initiative.
On the same day, the US and Israel targeted military sites in Iran's capital, intensifying their operations against Iran-aligned militants in Lebanon. In response, Iran launched a drone strike that, while causing no injuries, temporarily disrupted operations at Dubai's airport, a key travel hub. The attack ignited a fire in a fuel tank, which was swiftly controlled.
