US President's Upcoming Decision on Middle East Conflict

In a recent briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Donald Trump will determine within the next fortnight whether the United States will engage alongside Israel in its ongoing conflict with Iran. This statement reflects the administration's ongoing consideration of diplomatic avenues with Tehran.

Leavitt conveyed President Trump's acknowledgment of the potential for negotiations, despite the rising tensions in the region. She quoted him saying, "Given the significant possibility of upcoming negotiations with Iran, I will decide on our involvement within the next two weeks."

The Press Secretary also emphasized the administration's firm position regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions. When asked about the specifics of any potential agreement, she stated, "There will be no uranium enrichment, and Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. The President has made this very clear."

These comments come in the wake of escalating military confrontations between Israel and Iran over the past week. On Wednesday, Trump dismissed claims that he had already sanctioned a military strategy, reiterating his preference for a diplomatic solution.

"I am not seeking conflict. However, if faced with the choice between conflict and allowing a nuclear weapon, one must act accordingly," Trump remarked.

The situation intensified on June 13, when Israel initiated 'Operation Rising Lion', targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites. Iran's subsequent retaliation has led to significant exchanges of fire in the region.

On Thursday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz urged for decisive action against Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, referencing an attack on Soroka Hospital in southern Israel the previous day.

"Khamenei has openly stated his desire to see Israel destroyed—he personally orders attacks on hospitals. A man who views the annihilation of Israel as a goal cannot be allowed to continue existing," Katz asserted.

The White House maintains that while military options are available, there remains a possibility for diplomatic engagement with Iran. Trump is anticipated to finalize his decision regarding US involvement in the conflict within the next two weeks.
