Announcement of Trade Tariffs

Following his declaration of reciprocal tariffs affecting 14 nations, President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration will disclose a list of at least seven countries with which the U.S. will engage in trade. This announcement comes just two days before the July 9 deadline. In a post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that more countries would be named by Wednesday afternoon.

Trump stated, "We will be releasing a minimum of 7 Countries having to do with trade tomorrow morning, with an additional number of Countries being released in the afternoon. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

On Monday, the President had previously shared letters sent to 14 countries, notifying them of the reciprocal tariffs set to begin on August 1. He emphasized that there would be no extensions to this deadline, asserting that "all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 – No extensions will be granted."

The letters were initially sent to Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol. Shortly after, Trump announced that similar notifications were dispatched to Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, and Laos.

Further letters were sent to leaders of additional nations, including Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Cambodia. In his correspondence with the South Korean and Japanese leaders, Trump indicated that both countries would incur a 25 percent tariff starting August 1.

Thailand and Cambodia will face tariffs of 36 percent, while Bangladesh and Serbia will each see a 35 percent tariff. Malaysia and Kazakhstan are also set for a 25 percent tariff, with Myanmar and Laos facing a 40 percent tariff on goods exported to the U.S.

Indonesia will be subjected to a 32 percent tariff, and imports from South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina will incur a 30 percent tariff beginning August 1. According to Trump's letters, Tunisia will also face a 25 percent tariff.

When questioned about his commitment to the August 1 deadline for U.S. tariffs, Trump replied that he was "firm but not 100 percent firm." He added, "I would say firm but not 100 percent firm. If they call up and they say we would like to do something differently, we will be open to that."
