Trump Reports Progress in Ceasefire Talks Between Russia and Ukraine
Progress in Ceasefire Negotiations
On Monday, US President Donald Trump revealed that there has been 'some progress' regarding ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. This announcement follows a lengthy two-and-a-half-hour conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During an event at the White House, Trump conveyed a sense of hope regarding the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict between the two nations.
Trump Calls Situation 'Terrible'
Trump characterized the current situation as 'terrible,' noting that approximately 500 young lives are lost each week due to the conflict. While signing a bill, he remarked, 'We are trying to get that entire thing wrapped up. What a shame it ever started in the first place.' Later, he shared on social media, 'Just completed my two-hour call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. I believe it went very well. Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War.'
Positive Tone in Discussions
The President further emphasized, 'The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know the details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of. The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent. If it wasn’t, I would say so now, rather than later. Russia wants to do large-scale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic “bloodbath” is over, and I agree.' He highlighted the potential for Russia to create significant job opportunities and wealth, while also noting that Ukraine could greatly benefit from trade as it works to rebuild its nation.
Putin's Response to the Call
This development coincides with comments made by President Putin following his discussion with Trump. He stated, 'I would like to note that, on the whole, Russia’s position remains clear. The main thing is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis. We just need to determine the most effective ways to move towards peace.'
