Trump Proposes Peace Plan Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict
US President's Shift in Approach
Washington DC: As the conflict in the Middle East stretches into its fourth week, President Donald Trump has adjusted his position regarding Iran. On Tuesday, he announced that a peace proposal had been sent to Iran, suggesting a potential resolution to the ongoing hostilities after Tehran reiterated its commitment to preventing enemy vessels from navigating the Strait of Hormuz. According to unnamed officials cited by The New York Times, the United States transmitted a 15-point plan to Iran via Pakistan. Reports from Israel’s Channel 12 indicated that Trump suggested a month-long ceasefire during which both countries would negotiate terms, including a halt to Iran's uranium enrichment and the transfer of its enriched materials.
In exchange, Iran would permit safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz, while all sanctions against the nation would be lifted, and it would receive support for civil nuclear energy development at Bushehr. Additionally, Iran would dismantle its nuclear facilities at Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow, cease its proxy operations in the region, and stop funding and arming various groups. Discussions would also reportedly include limitations on Iran's missile capabilities and their deployment.
Despite Trump's inclination towards diplomatic solutions, there are reports indicating that the US is considering increasing its military presence in the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal noted that the US might deploy 3,000 troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the area. Interestingly, just two days prior to the commencement of joint airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iran, Washington was engaged in talks regarding a nuclear agreement.
Trump's Remarks on Negotiations:
On Tuesday, Trump remarked that Iran had provided the United States with a "very big present," referring to it as a "significant prize" associated with oil and gas. He stated, "They gave us a present, and the present arrived today. It was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money." Although he did not elaborate further, he implied that it was connected to energy resources.
Trump confirmed that senior officials, including Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are spearheading negotiations with Iran. "We're in negotiations right now. They're doing it, along with Marco and JD, with a number of people involved," he mentioned in the Oval Office.
Trump expressed hopefulness regarding the discussions, indicating that Tehran appears open to reaching an agreement.
Current Situation in the Middle East:
The conflict in the Middle East reached day 26 on Wednesday, with reports of ongoing attacks between Iran and Israel. Notably, Iran launched a series of missile strikes on Israeli cities, resulting in numerous injuries. In retaliation, Iran accused Israel of executing a second strike on Bushehr.
