Trump Hints at China's Role in Iran Ceasefire Negotiations
China's Influence in Iran's Ceasefire Talks
President Donald Trump has indicated that China might have played a significant role in encouraging Iran to engage in ceasefire discussions amid rising tensions with the United States. In a statement to AFP prior to his visit to Beijing, where he is set to meet with President Xi Jinping, Trump responded affirmatively when asked if China had influenced Tehran's decision to negotiate. Although he did not elaborate on China's specific involvement, his comments suggest a potential behind-the-scenes diplomatic effort by Beijing, which has historically maintained strong economic and strategic relations with Iran. China is a major partner for Iran, especially in the energy sector, and has previously acted as a mediator in regional disputes.
Agreement on a Two-Week Ceasefire
This assertion follows Trump's announcement of a temporary ceasefire with Iran. He stated that he would refrain from executing his planned strikes on Iranian infrastructure, contingent upon Tehran's agreement to a two-week truce and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global oil shipments. Trump also mentioned that Iran had put forth a "workable" ten-point peace proposal aimed at resolving the conflict initiated by the US and Israel earlier this year. Shortly thereafter, Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed its acceptance of the two-week ceasefire and indicated that negotiations with the US would commence in Islamabad on Friday.
Iran's conditions for concluding the conflict include control over the Strait of Hormuz, the withdrawal of US military forces from the area, lifting of sanctions, and the release of its frozen assets. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that passage through the strait would be managed by Iranian military forces for the duration of the ceasefire.
In support of the truce, Israel has expressed its backing while clarifying that Lebanon is not included in the agreement. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement affirming Israel's support for Trump's decision to pause military actions against Iran for two weeks, provided that Iran opens the straits and ceases all attacks on the US, Israel, and regional nations. The statement also emphasized that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, with the US assuring Israel of its commitment to achieving shared objectives in the forthcoming negotiations.
