Trump Facilitates Historic Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine: A Step Towards Peace?
A Potential Turning Point in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Washington: On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that both Russian and Ukrainian leaders have consented to a three-day ceasefire and a prisoner exchange, which he believes could signal a significant step towards concluding the prolonged conflict.
The ceasefire is set to take place from Saturday to Monday, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day, a significant holiday marking the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.
In a social media post, Trump expressed, "I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE-DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine. The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day, but likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II."
The ceasefire agreement entails a halt to all military actions and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
Trump emphasized that this request was made directly by him and expressed gratitude for the agreement reached by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He expressed hope that this could mark the beginning of the end of a long and arduous conflict.
He also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the war's resolution, stating, "we are getting closer and closer every day."
