Trump Discusses Potential Nuclear Deal with Iran
Trump's Stance on Iran Nuclear Agreement
President Donald Trump of the United States emphasized that any agreement between Washington and Tehran will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump criticized CNN for claiming that his Iran Nuclear Deal does not address nuclear issues. He clarified, "The agreement explicitly states that Iran will not possess a Nuclear Weapon." He further noted that the deal elaborates on various nuclear-related topics, asserting that much of the agreement focuses on these aspects. Trump labeled CNN and other media outlets as 'Fake News,' suggesting they are struggling with low ratings and unlikely to improve.
In a Fox News interview, Trump expressed optimism about nearing a 'very good deal' with Iran. He outlined two possible outcomes: either a successful agreement or a military resolution. "We're close to a very good deal. If you're in a rush, you won't secure a good deal, but we are gradually achieving our objectives. If we don't get what we want, we will pursue a different approach," he stated during an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.
Trump acknowledged the negotiating skills of the Iranians and mentioned that the US holds 'significant leverage' in the discussions. Recently, he convened a meeting with key cabinet members and military officials in the situation room, although it ended without a clear direction for future actions.
Reports indicate that Trump has requested several modifications to the agreement reached by his envoys during recent talks with Iranian representatives. He aims to finalize the deal soon while reinforcing critical points, particularly concerning Iran's nuclear materials, as reported by Axios citing two US officials.
"We need more specifics regarding how the US will obtain the material and the timeline involved," a senior administration official informed the news outlet, referring to enriched uranium. Additionally, another source revealed that Trump seeks to revise some language regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that facilitates the flow of one-fifth of the world's energy under normal circumstances.
According to US officials, it is expected to take approximately three days for the Iranians to respond. The ongoing negotiations aim to finalize a peace agreement and conclude the conflict that began on February 28.
