Trump Addresses Trade Issues with India

During a political event in Washington, President Donald Trump once again spoke about the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and India. He mentioned in passing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "not very happy" with him, attributing this to the heavy tariffs imposed by the US on Indian goods.

While addressing members of the House Republican Party retreat, Trump claimed that Modi had met with him and that their relationship is generally positive, although there is discomfort due to current circumstances. According to Trump, India is now facing high tariffs from the US because it has not fully complied with Washington's expectations regarding oil purchases from Russia.

It is noteworthy that the Trump administration has imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on Indian products, with 25 percent specifically linked to oil imports from Russia. The US has accused India of indirectly supporting Russia's economy by purchasing cheap Russian crude oil, a point Trump has raised multiple times in public forums.

In his speech, Trump also noted that India has somewhat reduced its oil imports from Russia in recent months and is progressing with defense agreements with the US. He referenced the order of 68 Apache helicopters, emphasizing that defense cooperation between the two nations continues and is evolving.

Defending his tariff policy, Trump asserted that these decisions are benefiting the US economically. He stated that through strict tariff measures, the US is protecting its trade interests and compelling partner countries to reconsider their positions.

However, India has already dismissed Trump's claim that Modi assured him of halting oil purchases from Russia. New Delhi clarified that no such discussions took place and that India formulates its energy policy with national interests in mind.

Meanwhile, Trump is also positioning himself as a potential mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He has mentioned conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, although no concrete solutions have been announced yet. As such, US-India trade relations, oil imports from Russia, and global diplomacy are likely to remain focal points in the near future.
