During a GOP retreat, Trump discussed the impact of these tariffs on India's oil purchases and emphasized the need for greater cooperation from New Delhi. He also mentioned that India's imports from Russia have decreased significantly. Trump Discusses Tariffs and Relations with Modi

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “not particularly pleased” with him due to the tariffs imposed by the United States on India for acquiring oil from Russia. This statement was made during the House GOP Member Retreat.

Trump indicated that these tariffs have led India to decrease its oil imports from Russia significantly. He recounted a meeting with Modi, stating, “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please?’”

The US leader further explained, “He is not that happy with me because they are incurring substantial tariffs now due to their oil purchases, but they have notably reduced imports from Russia.”

Trump has consistently claimed that the discounted Russian oil imports by nations like India are contributing to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In August, the Trump administration escalated tariffs on goods imported from India to 50% for Russian oil purchases, following an initial 25% reciprocal tariff.

At that time, India expressed its disappointment, labeling the US decision to impose such tariffs as “extremely unfortunate,” especially since other nations are also pursuing similar actions in their national interests.

Trump's comments came shortly after he suggested that the US might increase tariffs on India if it does not reduce its Russian oil imports. He emphasized the need for India to support US efforts in this regard.

On Monday, Trump stated, “They wanted to make me happy, basically… Prime Minister Modi’s a very good man. He’s a good guy. He knew I was not happy. It was important to make me happy. They do trade, and we can raise tariffs on them very quickly.”

As of now, India's Ministry of External Affairs and its embassy in Washington have not responded to Trump's recent statements. New Delhi has consistently asserted that its energy policy aims to maintain stable prices and secure supplies.

The Congress party criticized the Indian government, asserting that India should pursue an independent foreign policy rather than a stance of “silent submission.”

Additionally, reports indicate that India's imports of Russian oil reached a six-month peak in both volume and value in November, while simultaneously increasing oil purchases from the US to a seven-month high.
