Trump Comments on India's Russian Oil Purchases and Tariff Implications
Trump's Remarks on India and Russian Oil
New York/Washington, Jan 5: President Donald Trump has expressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of his dissatisfaction regarding India's acquisition of Russian oil, indicating that the US could impose tariffs on India swiftly.
These comments were made by Trump during a press interaction on Sunday while traveling aboard Air Force One from Florida to Washington DC.
"India wanted to ensure my satisfaction. Modi is a commendable leader; he understands my concerns. It was crucial for them to address my feelings. They engage in trade, and we can impose tariffs on them very rapidly, which would negatively impact them," Trump stated.
His statements followed remarks from US Senator Lindsey Graham, who was also on Air Force One, noting that the tariffs enacted by Trump are a significant factor in India's reduced purchases of Russian oil.
Graham discussed his proposed tariff legislation, which aims to impose a 500% levy on imports from nations that buy Russian oil, emphasizing the need to exert pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin's clientele to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump remarked that the sanctions are severely affecting Russia and then referenced India. Graham added that the US has implemented a 25% tariff on India for its Russian oil purchases.
"I visited the Indian Ambassador's residence about a month ago, and he was primarily concerned with how they are reducing their Russian oil imports. He requested, 'Could you ask the President to lift the tariff?'" Graham recounted.
