Trump Claims Iran is on the Brink of Collapse: What’s Next for US-Iran Relations?
Trump's Bold Statement on Iran's Situation
Washington: On Tuesday, President Donald Trump asserted that Iran has communicated to the United States that it is experiencing a "state of collapse."
In a social media post, Trump mentioned, "They want us to 'Open the Hormuz Strait' as soon as possible while they navigate their leadership issues."
He expressed confidence that Iran would resolve its internal disagreements regarding negotiations with the US.
The White House has yet to clarify who from the Iranian side conveyed this message, who in the Trump administration received it, and whether the communication was direct or through a third party.
At the same time, it appears that the Trump administration is not inclined to accept Iran's proposal to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the blockade.
Iran's offer also includes delaying discussions on its nuclear program, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio seems to have dismissed.
"We must ensure that any agreement reached effectively prevents them from rapidly pursuing a nuclear weapon at any time," Rubio stated during a Fox News interview on Monday.
The White House confirmed that Trump's national security team reviewed the proposal, which was reportedly communicated by Pakistan, and Trump is expected to address it later. This offer surfaced as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Russia, a longstanding ally of Tehran.
