Trump Claims India Will Eliminate High Tariffs: What This Means for Trade

Trump's Bold Statement on India's Tariffs
New York/Washington: On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that India has consented to eliminate its high tariffs, stating they would be reduced to zero.
During a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump remarked, "India, for instance, has some of the highest tariffs globally. We won't tolerate that, and they have already agreed to lower them. They will drop them to nothing. They would never have done this for anyone else but me."
This statement came during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where they discussed trade relations between the US and Canada.
Trump further emphasized, "We will establish some figures and declare that our country is open for business. They will come in and pay for the privilege of shopping in the United States. It's straightforward."
Previously, Trump has referred to India as the "tariff king" and a "significant abuser" in trade matters.
Just last month, he expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations with India regarding a bilateral trade agreement, stating that discussions were progressing well and he believed a deal would be reached.
