Arrest of Shahjahan Islam

Agartala, Jan 5: Shahjahan Islam, a prominent leader of the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC), was apprehended by law enforcement on Monday after evading capture for six months in relation to two FIRs.

According to Sadar sub-divisional police officer DP Roy, the arrest occurred following a targeted operation based on intelligence reports at Joypur, located on the city's outskirts.

Islam faces serious charges, including attempted murder, as outlined in the FIRs filed against him. He is expected to be presented in a local court to request police custody.

The complaints against him were initiated by former BJP state committee treasurer Nagadhiraj Dutta, who accused Islam of making offensive remarks about Chief Minister Manik Saha during a live Facebook session and allegedly attacking BJP members on June 8, 2025.

Additionally, another FIR was filed by Billal Miah, a leader of the BJP's Minority Morcha, alleging Islam made inappropriate comments about him.

Previously, Shahjahan's father, Khairul Islam, and brother, Nazrul Islam, were also arrested in connection with these cases but were subsequently released on bail.

Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Assembly, has condemned the police actions against Shahjahan's family, labeling it a deliberate effort to suppress opposition voices.
