Agartala, Nov 3: Authorities in Tripura have apprehended eight individuals and identified 19 others as suspects related to an assault on Border Security Force (BSF) members in Ashabari, located in the Sepahijala district.
Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the arrests on Tuesday, emphasizing that any violence against security forces would be met with strict legal repercussions.
A senior police official reported that three BSF personnel, including a company commander, sustained injuries when a group of villagers allegedly attacked them with sticks and bamboo near the international border, under the jurisdiction of the Kalamchaura police station.
The confrontation began when BSF personnel noticed individuals from both India and Bangladesh suspected of engaging in cross-border smuggling activities.
As they attempted to detain an Indian suspect, the Bangladeshi individuals reportedly fled back across the border. The Indian suspect also escaped and allegedly informed the villagers that he had been assaulted by the BSF.
This led to a large gathering of villagers who surrounded a BSF vehicle and attacked the personnel.
Reports indicate that the mob tried to seize a soldier's rifle and caused damage to the vehicle. One of the attackers was also reported injured during the incident.
Local sources suggested that there had been a prior altercation between the villagers and the BSF’s 49th Battalion stationed at the Ashabari Border Outpost.
The clash reportedly took place near Ashabari Gram Panchayat, escalating after a BSF jawan allegedly struck a local resident, identified as Hefzur Rahman, with a baton.
In response, villagers blocked the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road, disrupting traffic in the area.
Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar, along with personnel from the Rahimpur Border Outpost, arrived at the scene following the incident but was reportedly attacked by the enraged crowd.
Their vehicle was vandalized, and tensions rose further with the arrival of additional BSF personnel.
According to local reports, Kumar and three other BSF members were injured and received initial treatment at the Boxanagar Primary Health Centre. However, police confirmed that three personnel were indeed injured.
Senior officials from both the BSF and police later arrived to manage the situation, and authorities stated that normalcy had been restored while an investigation is ongoing to determine the events leading to the clash.
Tripura shares an extensive 856-km international border with Bangladesh, which encircles the state on three sides. A significant portion of this border is fenced to deter smuggling and other cross-border illegal activities.
