The Tripura High Court has recently dismissed a Public Interest Litigation regarding illegal immigration into the state. Filed by civil rights activists, the petition sought clarity on government actions following a Ministry of Home Affairs notification. The court advised the petitioners to wait for a response from the state government but allowed them to return to court if necessary. This ruling comes amid ongoing concerns about illegal immigrants from neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar, with local politicians urging for decisive action.

Court Disposes of Immigration Case

Agartala, July 11: The Tripura High Court has recently dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding illegal immigration into the state, as confirmed by a senior legal representative.

The PIL was filed jointly by Dr. Bijoy Debbarma, who leads a civil rights group, and John Debbarma, a student activist linked to the Twipra Students' Federation (TSF). This action was taken after they received no feedback on a previous representation made to the state government.

On June 24, the petitioners had approached the state government for clarification on its plans to enforce a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in May. This notification mandated all states to adopt strict measures against illegal immigrants, outlining a four-step protocol: identification, adjudication, detention, and deportation of undocumented individuals.

During the initial hearing on Thursday, the division bench, headed by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, dismissed the petition, advising the petitioners to await further communication from the state government. Deputy Solicitor General Bidyot Majumder informed the media about this development.

Should the petitioners not receive a timely response from the government, they retain the right to re-approach the court regarding this issue.

In a related matter, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting intervention to identify and deport illegal immigrants from neighboring nations, including Bangladesh and Myanmar.
