Agartala, Jun 24: The Tripura state government has implemented a new policy prohibiting doctors at the GBP-AGMC hospital from engaging in private practice, aiming to enhance the quality of services provided at this healthcare facility.

State Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced that faculty members and medical officers at GB Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College will receive a 20% increase in their basic salary as a non-practice allowance.

During a recent cabinet meeting, the ministers approved the proposal to restrict private practice for these healthcare professionals.

"In return for this restriction, they will receive a 20% salary hike as a non-practice allowance. A formal notification will be issued shortly," Chowdhury stated.

The decision aims to enhance patient satisfaction at the state's leading healthcare institution, as noted by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who expressed concerns over ongoing complaints despite improvements in infrastructure. The decision was made after consultations with the medical community.

Chowdhury mentioned that faculty members and medical officers wishing to continue private practice have the option to resign from their positions at the state-run hospital.

Approximately 350 faculty members and medical officers are currently affiliated with the hospital, according to official sources.

Initially, this policy will apply only to doctors at GB Pant Hospital and AGMC as a pilot program, with the potential for future expansion to other government hospitals.
