SILCHAR, Sept 7: The Trinamool Congress encountered a significant setback in Cachar on Sunday when its district president Rajesh Deb, along with prominent leader Mohan Lal Das and 48 other members, switched allegiance to the BJP ahead of the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election.
Dilip Saikia, the state BJP president, greeted the new members at the party office in Cachar, alongside Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev. Dev's transition from the Trinamool to the BJP in June had already signified a major political shift in the Barak Valley.
Saikia characterized this event as an expansion of the 'BJP family', asserting that the new members would bolster the party's organizational framework in the area.
He highlighted Dev's election to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, emphasizing that her political endeavors would remain closely tied to Assam and the advancement of Barak Valley. 'Together, every karyakarta will work for the development of the region, the State, and the country,' Saikia remarked while welcoming the newcomers.
With the Silchar Municipal Corporation election scheduled for October 3, this shift is perceived as a strategic move by the BJP to enhance its political and organizational presence in the city. This development poses a new challenge for the Trinamool Congress as it strives to maintain its district-level structure and significance in the upcoming civic elections.
