Kolkata, June 4: On Thursday, the Kolkata Police apprehended Biswajit Mondal, a Councillor from Ward No. 114 representing the Trinamool Congress, in connection with a harassment case involving a woman from 2024.

Mondal's arrest marks the fourth Trinamool Councillor detained in the past three days, with charges primarily revolving around corruption and extortion.

According to police sources, the victim accused Mondal of molestation and sexual harassment on two occasions: once in March 2024 and again on May 9 of this year. She reported that he used vulgar language and issued threats against her.

The woman claimed that after the initial incident, she reported the assault to the police, but no action was taken due to Mondal's political connections. Following the second incident, she returned to the Regent Park Police Station, where her complaint was finally registered, leading to Mondal's arrest on Thursday morning.

In the last three days, the arrests of four Trinamool Congress Councillors have raised concerns about corruption within the party. On June 2, Sachin Singh and Arjit Das, Councillors from wards 36 and 106, were arrested on similar charges. The following night, Mahesh Kumar Sharma, a Councillor from ward 42, was also taken into custody.

In a related development, former Minister Firhad Hakim resigned from his position as Mayor of Kolkata on Wednesday, a decision made with the approval of party leader and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Hakim was among several Trinamool MLAs who attended an administrative meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, before resigning.
