A Heartfelt Farewell to a Media Pioneer

Doomdooma, Dec 27: The Doomdooma Press Club was filled with a somber atmosphere on Friday as journalists, academics, and local residents came together to honor the memory of Prafulla Govinda Baruah, the esteemed Chairman Emeritus of the Assam Tribune Group and editor of The Assam Tribune. His passing has created a significant loss in the media sector of Assam.

Dr. Samudragupta Kashyap, a prominent journalist and current chancellor of Nagaland University, referred to PG Baruah as 'a worthy son of a worthy father.' He highlighted how PG Baruah upheld the legacy of his father, Radha Govinda Baruah, and played a crucial role in elevating the Assam Tribune Group to a prominent newspaper institution.

Speaking at the tribute event organized by the Doomdooma Press Club, Dr. Kashyap noted that employees of the Assam Tribune Group always felt a sense of security under PG Baruah's guidance.

He emphasized that PG Baruah maintained a steadfast commitment to journalistic ideals and ethics, establishing both The Assam Tribune and Dainik Asam as paragons of responsible journalism in Assam.

Dr. Kashyap described PG Baruah as a soft-spoken yet resolute figure, a rare breed of proprietor-editor in today's media landscape.

He also mentioned that PG Baruah consistently reminded journalists of their social responsibilities, ensuring that the newspaper group remained free from political influence and governmental manipulation.

The event featured moving tributes from various speakers, including Dr. Meena Devi Baruah, president of the Tinsukia district unit of the Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samiti; Uddhav Sharma, a retired tea estate manager; Dr. Kamaleswar Kalita, principal of Doomdooma College; Dr. Amorjit Saikia, principal of Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College, Doomdooma; and senior journalist Dhiren Deka, all of whom praised PG Baruah's integrity, humility, and significant contributions to journalism.

Veteran journalist Arjun Baruah, who served as a correspondent for Dainik Asam for over 51 years, initiated the tribute by lighting a lamp before PG Baruah's portrait and offering floral tributes, setting a respectful tone for the gathering.

The tribute meeting was chaired by Manoj Dutta, president of the Doomdooma Press Club. The Club's secretary, Pradip Kumar Moran, opened the event by outlining its purpose, while the proceedings were managed by Abhijit Khataniar, vice president of the Doomdooma Press Club and correspondent for The Assam Tribune.
