Tributes Pour In for Legendary Shooter Jaspal Rana Following His Passing
A Heartfelt Loss
Ronjan Singh Sodhi, a former Indian shooter, expressed his sorrow over the death of esteemed shooter and coach Jaspal Rana, calling it a personal tragedy.
Jaspal Rana, a celebrated figure in Indian shooting, passed away in New Delhi on Friday after facing health challenges.
"I received numerous missed calls from friends this morning... Upon answering one, I learned the heartbreaking news about Jaspal. He was not just an exceptional shooter but also a wonderful person and a dear friend. This is a personal loss for me," Sodhi shared with the media.
A Legacy of Excellence
Rana, one of India's most accomplished shooters, leaves behind an impressive legacy that spans over thirty years. He holds the record as India's most successful athlete in the Commonwealth Games, having amassed an incredible 15 medals: nine gold, four silver, and two bronze across the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 Games.
His success was not limited to the Commonwealth Games; Rana also won four gold medals and one silver at the Asian Games, including a gold at the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games and a remarkable three gold medals at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.
At the 1994 World Shooting Championships in Milan, he achieved gold while setting a record score. Additionally, he matched the world record in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol event with a total score of 590 during the 2006 Asian Games.
At the time of his passing, Rana was serving as India's high-performance coach for pistol events, leaving a lasting impact on Indian sports as both a champion and a mentor.
Condolences from Political Leaders
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences on Friday, referring to Rana's death as an "irreparable loss to the nation."
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of legendary sportsperson Jaspal Rana Ji. He dedicated his life to showcasing India's strength in shooting, winning international accolades and nurturing young talent as a coach. His passing is a significant loss for the nation. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and countless fans," Shah posted on social media.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his grief, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji. His loss is a significant blow to Indian sports. He brought great honor to the nation through his remarkable achievements in shooting. His dedication to mentoring young athletes was equally commendable. His commitment to excellence and service to sports earned him widespread admiration. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire sports community during this difficult time. Om Shanti."
