Honoring a Legend
Chandigarh, July 15: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha convened on Tuesday to express condolences following the tragic passing of renowned Punjabi Sikh marathon runner Fauja Singh, as initiated by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh.
Ravjot Singh conveyed his sorrow over the loss of the 114-year-old athlete, who tragically died in a road accident. He highlighted Fauja Singh's remarkable achievement as the oldest marathon runner, bringing pride to the Sikh community globally.
The minister reflected on Fauja Singh's enduring legacy, praying for strength for his family during this difficult time.
Currently, the body of the legendary runner is being held in a mortuary until his children, residing abroad, can return for the final rites.
Fauja Singh was struck by a vehicle around 3:30 p.m. while attempting to cross the road in his hometown of Beas, near Adampur.
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria paid tribute to him, recalling how, at 114, he continued to motivate countless individuals with his resilience. He reminisced about walking alongside Fauja Singh during the 'Nasha Mukt -- Rangla Punjab' march in December 2024, noting the energy he brought to the event.
Kataria emphasized that Fauja Singh's legacy would live on in the hearts of those advocating for a healthier, drug-free Punjab, extending his condolences to the family and admirers worldwide.
Fauja Singh, known as the 'Turbaned Tornado,' began his running journey at the age of 89 after the tragic loss of his wife and son. He participated in 18 marathons, starting with the London Marathon in 2000.
After completing his final three marathons in Toronto (2011), London (2012), and Hong Kong (2013), he decided to retire.
Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the jathedar of the Akal Takht, expressed his sorrow, stating, “Sardar Fauja Singh was a dynamic Sikh who brought international recognition to the Sikh identity and the turban.”
He encouraged the youth of Punjab to learn from Fauja Singh's life, which exemplified the teachings of Gurbani: ‘Look ahead; don’t turn your face backwards...’
