Guwahati, April 4: Gilbertson Sangma, one of the most celebrated footballers from Assam, passed away at his home in Kahilipara on Saturday morning at the age of 71.

Born on April 21, 1955, in Dibrugarh, Sangma was a prominent figure in Assam's football scene during the 1970s and 80s, enchanting fans with his exceptional skills.

He made his mark on the Indian senior team in 1975, earning three caps in friendly matches against Indonesia and Thailand.

Throughout his domestic career, he played for Assam and Assam Police, establishing himself as one of the state's most renowned forwards.

Over a span of 17 years, he played a crucial role in elevating Assam's status in football, especially during a period when teams from Bengal and Kerala were dominant nationally.

One of his standout moments came in 1981 when he netted the winning goal for Assam Police in the Bordoloi Trophy final against Dempo SC.

Earlier, during the 1974-75 season, his goal was pivotal in helping Assam eliminate the defending champions Kerala, allowing them to reach the Santosh Trophy quarterfinals.

Often hailed as the finest footballer to emerge from Assam, Sangma was celebrated for his comprehensive skill set, which included shooting, stamina, strength, and tactical awareness.

Molong Ao, a former player for Assam Police, remembered Sangma as a complete footballer.

“We learned the game by observing him. He was an extraordinary talent with a deep commitment to football,” Ao reflected.

“I first encountered him in 1981. We would rush to Nehru Stadium to see him play. Later, when we joined Assam Police, we gained invaluable insights from him. My association with him lasted from 1981 to 1985. His performances are unforgettable for those who witnessed them,” he added.

In recent years, Sangma faced health challenges, having been diagnosed with dementia in 2023, which left him mostly bedridden. He is survived by two daughters.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his sorrow over Sangma's passing.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of the legendary Gilbertson Sangma. His remarkable contributions to Indian football have inspired countless youth in the Northeast. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends,” Sonowal stated.
