Tribute to DY Patil: A Pioneer in Education and Former Governor Passes Away
A Legacy Remembered
Former Governor of West Bengal and Bihar, D.Y. Patil, has passed away at the age of 90. Renowned as a visionary and educator, he played a pivotal role in advancing technical and professional education in India. Under his leadership, the D.Y. Patil Group was established, which includes three deemed universities, six private universities, and over 180 institutions. The first of these, the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology (RAIT), was inaugurated in Navi Mumbai in 1983.
Honors and Contributions
In recognition of his significant contributions to education and social service, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991. The D.Y. Patil Group has grown to become one of the largest private education networks in the country, establishing more than 150 institutions across Maharashtra, including schools, engineering colleges, medical and dental colleges, nursing schools, management institutes, and law colleges, along with universities and teaching hospitals.
Foundational Initiatives
One of his notable initiatives was the establishment of the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology (RAIT) in 1983, which was among the first private engineering colleges in Mumbai. His institutions, located in Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Kolhapur, have educated millions of students and have been instrumental in enhancing access to professional and technical education.
