Tremors Felt Across North India Following Powerful Earthquake in Afghanistan
Earthquake Shakes Northern Regions
New Delhi: On Friday night, residents in various northern Indian states, including Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana, experienced earthquake tremors, according to officials.
The seismic activity, which lasted only a few seconds, was recorded around 9:45 PM, with no immediate reports of damage.
An official from Jammu and Kashmir indicated that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.9.
The quake's epicenter was traced to Afghanistan, specifically at a latitude of 36.398 degrees North and a longitude of 70.878 degrees East.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 150 kilometers.
Baldev Chand, a resident of Chandigarh living on the second floor, described feeling a strong jolt that lasted briefly.
Ajay Kumar, who resides on the 11th floor in Zirakpur, Punjab, noted, "The tremors were quick. We considered evacuating but they ceased shortly after."
In Pakistan, a more powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the same night, with its epicenter also in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region at latitude 36.48°N and longitude 70.84°E.
Earlier on the same day, a 3.8-magnitude tremor was recorded, and just days before, a 5.9-magnitude quake hit the region on February 20, followed by a 5.6-magnitude quake in Balochistan on February 13.
The most devastating earthquake in Pakistan's history occurred in 2005, resulting in approximately 74,000 fatalities.
