Travis Head Supports Jake Weatherald Amidst Struggles in Ashes Series
Head Backs Weatherald After Test Loss
Following Australia's defeat to England in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, opener Travis Head expressed his support for Jake Weatherald, who has faced challenges since making his international debut during this series. Weatherald was chosen to fill the opening position left vacant by David Warner's retirement, following impressive performances for Tasmania and Australia A.
The 31-year-old had a standout Sheffield Shield season in 2024, scoring 950 runs, and had previously accumulated 301 runs in four Shield matches, averaging around 37 before the Ashes. However, Weatherald's start in Test cricket has been rocky, beginning with a golden duck against Jofra Archer. His highlights include a solid 23 in a run chase during the first Perth Test and a fiery 72 in Brisbane, but he has struggled to convert starts into significant scores, finishing with just 146 runs at an average of 20.85.
'He is Good Enough for International Cricket': Head
After the recent loss, Head voiced his confidence in Weatherald, stating he believes Weatherald is capable of succeeding at the international level. "I think he is a good enough cricketer for international cricket. He has shown glimpses of his potential in his first four Tests, and it's not always easy to start your international career," Head remarked.
He acknowledged Weatherald's contributions, particularly highlighting his crucial innings in Brisbane, despite the lack of runs in recent matches.
Head's Impressive Performance as Opener
Travis Head, who has transitioned from the middle order to opening, has been in exceptional form this series. After stepping in for Usman Khawaja, who faced back issues, Head scored a rapid century at Perth and a remarkable 170 at Adelaide, solidifying his position as the series' top scorer with 437 runs at an average exceeding 54.
Despite Australia's loss to England, Head's performance has been a highlight, with no other player surpassing the 300-run mark in the series.
'I See Myself as the Team's Opening Batter for the Series'
Looking ahead, Head confirmed his intention to continue as an opener in the upcoming Sydney New Year Test starting January 4. However, he expressed uncertainty about his long-term role, given the gap until Australia's next Test in August. "I see myself as the team's opening batter for the series, and we have time to figure out the team's direction," he stated.
Head expressed confidence in his batting, stating he feels he is performing well and contributing positively to the team's efforts. He remains adaptable, ready to bat wherever the selectors deem necessary for the team's success.
