Legal Action Against Makeup Artist for Comments on Prime Minister
In Kozhikode, Kerala, on July 28, a case has been filed against the well-known transgender makeup artist and reality show participant, Janmoni Das, for allegedly making inappropriate remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The police confirmed this information on Tuesday.
The Kozhikode Cyber Police initiated the case based on a complaint lodged by Navya Haridas, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women's wing.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly made defamatory and insulting comments against the Prime Minister through various social media platforms with the intent to incite unrest and disrupt communal harmony. The police stated that the case has been registered under Section 192 (provocation to riot) and Section 356(2) (criminal defamation) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Section 120(O) of the Kerala Police Act (causing disturbance through repeated or unwanted communication). This action comes just a day after Janmoni publicly apologized for her recent comments regarding Prime Minister Modi and his parents.
Janmoni expressed that she did not intend to hurt anyone. In a video shared on Instagram, she stated that if her remarks offended anyone, she would like to apologize publicly. She also acknowledged that she should have verified the facts before making such statements.
The controversial video featuring Das's remarks about Prime Minister Modi gained significant traction on social media after she spoke during a student protest in New Delhi, leading to widespread criticism. In a follow-up video on Instagram, she remarked, 'A major controversy has arisen regarding my video. I had no idea it would become such a significant issue.'
She explained that her comments were a response to a video related to the Delhi protests and that she might not have articulated her thoughts clearly in Malayalam. Clarifying her previous statements, Das emphasized that she did not intend to comment on the Prime Minister's mother and that her remarks were solely related to the content of the video she had viewed.
