On July 27, in Kochi, renowned transgender makeup artist and reality show participant Janmoni Das publicly apologized for her recent offensive comments regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his parents. In a video shared on Instagram, Das expressed regret, stating that she never intended to hurt anyone's feelings. She acknowledged that she should have verified the facts before making such statements.
Controversy Erupts Over Comments
Das's remarks, made during a conversation with a section of the media about student protests in New Delhi, quickly went viral on social media, leading to significant backlash. In her new video, she mentioned, “A major controversy has arisen from my video. I had no idea it would escalate to this extent.”
Realization of the Issue
She explained that her reaction came after watching a video related to the protests in Delhi and responding to a question posed by the media. Das admitted, “I might not have articulated my thoughts well in Malayalam.” She became aware of the gravity of the situation when she started receiving numerous threatening calls and messages from Monday morning.
Clarification on Intent
Das clarified that she had no intention of making comments about the Prime Minister's mother and that her remarks were solely related to the content of the video she had viewed. “I raised a question based on what I saw. I did not aim to make any derogatory comments against Modi Ji,” she stated.
Sincere Apology
Despite the backlash, Das emphasized that she never meant to offend anyone. “If I made a mistake, I sincerely apologize. I wanted to publicly express my regret. Please forgive me as if I were a child. I have nothing more to say,” she added.
Acknowledgment of Mistake
After researching online, Das realized that her statement was factually incorrect. “I should have verified the facts before making such a statement. I was very distressed by this incident, which is why I decided to share this video, albeit late,” she explained.
Political Repercussions
Meanwhile, Navya Haridas, the state president of the BJP women's wing, filed a complaint against Janmoni Das with the assistant police commissioner in Kozhikode. Rejecting Das's public apology, Haridas stated that social media should not be a platform for anyone to make derogatory remarks against others. She announced that BJP workers would file complaints against Das at police stations across the state on Tuesday at 10 AM. Haridas remarked, “Freedom of expression in the country does not mean one can say anything against anyone.”

The BJP leader condemned the derogatory remarks made against the Prime Minister and his parents, asserting that only strict legal action could curb such tendencies.
