Transforming Tura: Meghalaya's Urban Development Initiatives
Significant Urban Development in Tura
Shillong, March 8: On Saturday, Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that over Rs 700 crore is being invested in various development projects aimed at modernizing Tura into a well-connected urban hub. He emphasized the crucial role of community involvement in upholding civic discipline and cleanliness.
During the inauguration of the Nehru Ading Locality Beautification Project in Tura's Hawakhana area, the Chief Minister highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and facilities in the town.
"This is my first official visit to this locality, and I am pleased to witness the gradual transformation of Tura, although there is still much work ahead," stated Chief Minister Sangma while addressing local residents and community leaders at the event organized by the Nehru Ading Development and Welfare Committee.
He revealed that projects exceeding Rs 700 crore are currently in progress throughout Tura to bolster urban infrastructure and promote development.
Under the Smart City Mission, Chief Minister Sangma mentioned that Rs 60 crore has been earmarked for the paving of internal roads in various localities within the town.
He noted that Rs 15 crore has already been utilized in Phase-I for street lighting and beautification, with an additional Rs 15 crore allocated specifically for enhancing Tura Bazar.
The Chief Minister also discussed the ongoing city beautification initiative, which includes the expansion of surveillance and lighting systems.
According to CM Sangma, approximately 350 CCTV cameras and nearly 500 street lights are being installed throughout the town.
"In the Nehru Ading locality, we have already installed four CCTV cameras and six street lights," he added.
He stressed that infrastructure improvements alone cannot transform a city; active participation from citizens in maintaining civic discipline is essential.
Using Japan as a reference, the Chief Minister urged the community to adopt responsible public behavior and cleanliness, encouraging residents to safeguard the enhancements made in their area.
During the discussion, residents raised various concerns, including the need for a community hall, upgrades to school infrastructure, and issues related to drug activities in certain neighborhoods.
