Transforming Sports: CM Dhami Celebrates National Paralympic Powerlifting Championship

During a virtual event on Friday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the National Paralympic Powerlifting Championship, highlighting a remarkable decade in India's sports history, which he described as a golden era.
A Celebration of Willpower
Speaking from COER University in Roorkee, CM Dhami emphasized that this championship transcends mere competition; it embodies India's unwavering spirit, turning challenges into opportunities.
He noted that powerlifting represents not just physical strength but also discipline, patience, courage, and self-confidence, showcasing resilience and self-respect.
Honoring India's Divyang Athletes
CM Dhami praised the achievements of India's divyang athletes, recalling notable figures such as Sheetal Devi, the first Indian Paralympic gold medalist, and Murlikant Petkar, who won gold in swimming at the 1972 Summer Paralympics.
He also mentioned Satyendra Singh Lohiya, who swam across the English Channel, and highlighted Sheetal Devi's gold medal win at the World Para Archery Championship despite her disabilities. Additionally, he celebrated the Indian Divyang Women's Cricket Team's victory in the T20 Blind Women's Cricket World Cup 2025.
Historic Achievements on the Global Stage
At the Tokyo Paralympics, Avani Lekhara and Sumit Antil secured gold medals in shooting and javelin throw, respectively, showcasing India's prowess internationally. Furthermore, Indian athletes made history at the 2024 Paris Paralympics with 29 medals and at the 2025 Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai with 110 medals, proving their exceptional talent.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged Padma Shri awardee Deepa Malik, India's first female Paralympian to win a silver medal in shot put at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, noting her inspiring journey as a biker, swimmer, and car rally driver.
A New Era for Indian Sports
CM Dhami reiterated that the last decade has ushered in significant changes in Indian sports, marking it as a golden period. He stated, "Today's 'New India' competes to win, not just to participate."
He attributed this transformation to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose commitment to sports has tripled the sports budget and fostered initiatives like 'Khelo India' to nurture talent and enhance infrastructure.
Uttarakhand: A Hub for Sports
The Chief Minister noted that the successful hosting of the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand has positioned the state as both 'Devbhoomi' (Land of the Gods) and 'Khelbhoomi' (Land of Sports).
Uttarakhand athletes secured 103 medals, placing 7th overall, and the state is now developing world-class sports facilities to host national and international events.
Acknowledging the Support of Parents
CM Dhami commended the parents of divyang athletes for their unwavering support, stating they have transformed perceived weaknesses into strengths. He encouraged others to draw inspiration from these athletes and assured that the Uttarakhand government will continue to support them in their endeavors.
