Landslide Halts Train Operations

Silchar, July 6: Train operations on the Lumding–Badarpur line faced another suspension on Sunday after a landslide caused a large boulder to fall onto the tracks near the 61/1-2 kilometer mark, situated between Dikhao and Mupa.

A senior representative from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed that this blockage occurred at the same site where a similar incident took place just three days prior.

The official stated, "A significant boulder is obstructing the line once more. Restoration efforts commenced early this morning, and a track safety inspection is expected around noon, depending on weather and ground conditions."

The official also noted that there have been no alterations to the train schedule. "Several trains are currently halted at Lumding and New Haflong, where provisions for breakfast and drinking water have been arranged for passengers," they added.

This recent incident, attributed to new soil movement in the region, has once again disrupted the only rail connection linking Barak Valley with the rest of Assam and beyond.

The ongoing disruptions underscore the delicate geological characteristics of this hilly area, especially during the monsoon season.

Officials reported that field teams are tackling difficult conditions to clear the debris and restore service. However, train operations will only recommence once safety clearances are secured.

The Lumding–Badarpur route is crucial for daily passenger travel and the transport of essential goods like food, fuel, and construction materials.

The frequent landslides along this corridor present a persistent challenge, leading to significant inconvenience and logistical setbacks in the region.

Railway authorities have requested passengers to remain patient and stay updated through official communication channels.

With additional rainfall anticipated in the coming days, officials are evaluating long-term strategies to reinforce the vulnerable areas of this important route.
