Incident Overview

In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old man lost his left leg after being attacked while traveling on a moving train. A minor has been taken into custody in connection with the assault.


According to a railway police official, the victim, identified as Gauri Ramdas Nikam from Nashik, was on the Tapovan Express when the incident occurred around 7 AM on Sunday, between Shahad and Ambivli stations in Thane district.


The officer explained that the 16-year-old suspect struck Nikam's hand while standing near the tracks, causing him to lose his balance and fall from the train. Unfortunately, his left leg was severed when he landed on the tracks and was hit by the train's wheels.


Aftermath and Response

The assailant continued to beat the bloodied Nikam with a stick before fleeing the scene with his mobile phone, valued at ₹20,000. Emergency assistance arrived promptly after fellow passengers and railway staff alerted the police.


The police officer reported that Nikam was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he is out of danger. However, due to the severe injury to his left leg, he will require extensive medical care. The minor has been detained following the filing of a case under the Indian Penal Code.


Modus Operandi of Criminal Gangs

Authorities noted that this method of operation is commonly used by the 'Phatka' gang in various parts of the Mumbai suburban railway network. Members of this gang typically wait near the tracks and attack passengers at the doors with sticks, causing them to drop their mobile phones.
