Accident at Well Claims Life in Chirang

Chirang, June 11: A tragic incident occurred in the 2nd Sattyapur village, located near the Indo-Bhutan border, where a 49-year-old man lost his life while trying to collect water from a well. This incident underscores the escalating water crisis faced by the community.

The deceased, Serman Mushahry, had gone to the well on Monday to gather water for his family amidst a persistent shortage. Unfortunately, while he was drawing water, a portion of loose soil and debris collapsed, trapping him fatally.

“He was merely trying to fetch water when the ground gave way,” recounted Birdau Mushahary, a local resident, in a conversation with a media outlet.

Family members and villagers gathered at the site of the collapsed well, while personnel from Fire and Emergency Services were also present to assist.

Serman’s untimely death has raised alarm and sorrow among the villagers, who have been grappling with an increasing water crisis attributed to deforestation and a declining water table.

“There was a time when this area was filled with trees and greenery,” Birdau lamented. “Now, due to extensive tree cutting and irregular rainfall, the water table has significantly dropped. This is why we are compelled to dig and rely on such perilous wells.”

He further mentioned that the village community, including elders and the headman, has consistently brought this issue to the attention of local authorities and the District Commissioner. “We have informed the administration. We sincerely hope for a lasting solution soon,” he expressed.
