Severe Weather Causes Catastrophe in Bengaluru

On Wednesday, Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, experienced devastating weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds. This natural disaster led to a tragic incident when a wall at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital collapsed in a busy area of the city. The unfortunate event resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including a six-year-old girl, while seven others sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses and police reported that some street vendors and pedestrians sought shelter near the hospital wall to escape the downpour when it suddenly gave way, burying them under debris.

Emergency services and police arrived promptly at the scene to assist local residents in recovering the bodies from the rubble.

Prime Minister Expresses Condolences and Announces Compensation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, which resulted in seven fatalities. He announced a compensation of two lakh rupees for the families of the deceased and fifty thousand rupees for the injured. In a post on social media, Modi described the wall collapse in Bengaluru as unfortunate and extended his condolences to the grieving families, wishing for the swift recovery of the injured.

He confirmed that the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would provide the announced compensation to the victims' families.

State Officials Respond to the Tragedy

Upon learning of the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site alongside the Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the Bengaluru Police Commissioner to assess the situation. He held GBA officials accountable for the tragedy, stating, "Seven people have died, and seven others are injured, all in stable condition. I have instructed doctors to provide free treatment to all victims."

Siddaramaiah also mentioned that each deceased's family would receive five lakh rupees in compensation, noting that many of the victims were impoverished street vendors. Initially, officials reported that three children had died, but the Chief Minister's office later clarified that only one six-year-old girl was among the deceased.

An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the wall's collapse, with Siddaramaiah stating, "We will investigate whether there was an engineering error. If found guilty, immediate action will be taken against them."

Investigation into Construction Practices

According to the Chief Minister, construction work was ongoing in the vicinity, with the contractor reportedly piling soil against the wall. Siddaramaiah suggested that the wall likely collapsed due to the pressure from the added soil. He stated, "It appears at first glance that it fell due to that pressure. I have asked the engineers—executive engineer and assistant executive engineer—if they checked whether it had weakened."

He emphasized that no one anticipated such heavy rainfall, as it was pre-monsoon precipitation.

Local Leaders Demand Accountability

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who was in Kanakapura during the incident, also visited the site. He expressed deep sorrow over the event, stating that the deaths occurred because some individuals sought shelter against the wall when the rain began. He noted, "I am deeply saddened by this incident. Such occurrences should not happen. Many trees have fallen, and vehicles have been damaged. I will instruct officials to cut down weak trees to prevent future tragedies during the monsoon."

Shivakumar reported that two individuals from Kerala died in the incident, while two others were injured. They were working with an organization to improve nutritional standards. He assured that arrangements would be made to send the bodies back to Kerala after post-mortem examinations.

Opposition leader and BJP MLA R. Ashok criticized the incident, stating that the deaths of innocent individuals, including children and street vendors, were not merely a natural disaster but a result of administrative negligence. He questioned how many more lives must be sacrificed due to poor infrastructure and public apathy, criticizing the Congress government's claims about 'Brand Bengaluru' while highlighting the dilapidated state of a major government hospital's wall.

Public Reaction and Future Precautions

BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra called for the Congress government in Karnataka to take responsibility for the incident and ensure compensation for the injured and the families of the deceased.
