Tragic Tunnel Collapse in Uttarakhand: Rescue Operations Underway

Chamoli (Uttarakhand). An ambitious hydropower project in the Himalayas turned into a scene of tragedy when a tunnel unexpectedly became a death trap. Around 7 PM on Thursday, while workers were engaged in the tail race tunnel (TRT) of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti project on the Alaknanda River, a loud explosion-like sound was heard, followed by a rush of debris and water flooding the tunnel. Within moments, a section of the tunnel measuring approximately 1.5 to 2 kilometers was inundated with water, mud, and rocks. The volume of debris was so significant that rescue officials compared it to the height and density of a four-story building.
Workers Trapped in the Tunnel
Around 22 workers found themselves trapped inside the tunnel due to the sudden disaster, which took everyone by surprise. The force of the water was so strong that it stripped some workers of their clothing, and debris was displaced over a wide area. The oxygen levels inside the tunnel began to plummet rapidly. The conditions—darkness, mud, water up to their necks, and insufficient air—turned into a life-and-death struggle for the workers.
A Night of Desperate Rescue Efforts
Upon receiving news of the incident, teams from the NDRF, SDRF, local administration, police, and project personnel rushed to the scene. However, the rescue operation proved to be challenging. Water levels inside the tunnel reached depths of three to five feet in several areas, complicating the search for the missing workers. Due to the severe oxygen shortage, rescue teams had to work in shifts of one hour. Conditions worsened overnight, forcing a temporary halt to the operation due to mud, water, and lack of oxygen.
Rescue Operations Intensified
Rescue teams entered the tunnel equipped with specialized tools, suction pumps, gas masks, and oxygen cylinders. The operation to remove water and debris commenced at a war footing. Some workers were rescued using blue drums and specialized equipment. The injured were promptly transported to hospitals. Initial reports indicated that 12 workers were safely rescued, while 10 lost their lives. The rescue operation continued for several days until all trapped workers were finally brought to safety.
A Battle for Survival
An official involved in the rescue stated, “Gaining access to the tunnel was the biggest challenge. The debris was so dense and heavy that even machines struggled to operate. Even with oxygen masks, breathing was difficult. We had to wade through mud and water up to our knees to reach the workers.”
Concerns Raised by Families
The news of the disaster cast a pall of grief over the families of the workers, many of whom had traveled from other states. Relatives of the deceased are demanding compensation and justice. The Chief Minister and the Disaster Management Minister visited the site to assess the rescue efforts. The government has assured compensation for the families of the deceased.
Lessons from Past Incidents
This incident recalls previous tragedies like the Silkyara tunnel disaster, where workers were trapped under debris for extended periods. Experts emphasize the need for stricter attention to geological structures, water seepage, and safety standards during tunnel construction in Himalayan regions.

With debris as high as a four-story building, a lack of oxygen, and life-threatening water conditions, this incident turned into a prolonged and arduous battle for the workers' lives. While the rescue teams managed to save several lives, many families have been left devastated. The pressing question remains: will adequate measures be taken to prevent such disasters in the future?
