Fatal Incident in Dhubri

Chapar/Dhubri, July 9: A devastating accident occurred on Monday night in Hatipota Moskaguri village, located under the jurisdiction of Chapar police station in Dhubri district, resulting in the loss of four lives.

A 14-wheeler truck, which was transporting bricks from the New Saral brick kiln, plunged into a ditch around 9 PM. Five individuals, including the driver, fell into the water, but tragically, four of them, including the driver, went missing. Local residents attempted to conduct a rescue operation but were hindered by darkness and rain.

On Tuesday morning, both residents and SDRF personnel initiated a rescue mission, successfully retrieving the bodies of the four individuals from the ditch. The deceased have been identified as Naznur Ahmed alias Riju, 31, from Srijangram in Bongaigaon district; Leben Barman, 35, from Hatipota; Bisharam Barman, 36; and Bikash Barman, 19.

The bodies were subsequently transported to Dhubri for post-mortem examinations.

Community members have raised concerns, alleging that the New Saral brick factory had improperly filled a natural reservoir to construct a road connecting to NH-17. The accident was attributed to the truck falling into deep water after heavy rains caused the ground to become unstable.

This incident has ignited public anger, with residents holding the brick kiln authorities accountable for negligence. Locals claim that the road leading to the brick kiln was built by illegally filling a waterbody, despite numerous objections from the community regarding safety issues.

Residents believe that the ongoing monsoon rains have weakened the soil, rendering the road unable to support the weight of the truck loaded with bricks, ultimately leading to this tragic event.
