Tragic Train Incident in Thane, Maharashtra Claims Lives and Sparks Safety Measures

Fatal Train Accident in Thane District
On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in Thane district, Maharashtra, where four passengers lost their lives and six others sustained injuries after falling from a moving train. This unfortunate event prompted the railway board to announce two significant safety measures shortly thereafter. Dilip Kumar, the Executive Director of Information and Publicity, stated that all new suburban train coaches will be equipped with automatic door-closing mechanisms. Additionally, existing coaches will be redesigned to incorporate this safety feature.
The Central Railway issued a statement following the incident at Mumbra station, indicating that overcrowding was a contributing factor to the passengers falling from the local train, which was en route to CSMT station. The railway authorities noted, "The cause of the incident is believed to be excessive crowding on the train." They also confirmed that police and railway officials were present at the scene.
The accident occurred during the morning rush hour when a packed train was traveling between Diva and Kopar stations. According to a police officer, at least four passengers died, and six were injured. It was reported that the incident likely resulted from passengers and their bags colliding as they hung from the steps of two overcrowded trains passing in opposite directions. Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, expressed his condolences and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to assist the victims and their families.
In a statement from the Deputy Chief Minister's office, it was revealed that an investigation into the accident has been initiated by the railway authorities. The officer mentioned that during peak hours, the train was extremely crowded, with many passengers standing near the doors. At least ten individuals fell from the moving train, and a guard from another train traveling towards Kasara alerted railway officials about the incident. All passengers who fell were transported to a government hospital in Kalwa.
