Madrid, Oct 28: A tragic incident occurred in Spain's Toledo province on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 individuals after two high-speed trains collided. Reports indicate that the collision involved a Renfe AVE service and a private Iryo train, with concerns that the death toll may increase.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at 8:54 am local time following the catastrophic crash near the Urda train station. The Castilla-La Mancha 112 emergency service confirmed that fire crews from Alcazar de San Juan and Orgaz, along with Civil Protection units from nearby areas and three medical helicopters, were deployed to assist in rescue efforts and aid victims. Local authorities reported a minimum of 39 fatalities, as noted by Spain-based 'Sur in English'.
According to a spokesperson for the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, the trains involved were transporting a total of 544 passengers. The Iryo train had 146 passengers, including a baby, while the Renfe train carried 397 passengers, as reported by 'El Pais'.
The cause of the collision remains unclear, with a spokesperson from the Ministry of Transport suggesting that initial assessments indicate the AVE train may have collided with the rear of the Iryo train, leading to the derailment of two carriages that fell down an embankment.
In the aftermath of the crash, all rail services on the high-speed route between Madrid and Andalusia have been halted since 8:54 am local time on Wednesday. This incident has disrupted medium-distance high-speed services.
Iryo announced via X that all services departing from Atocha towards the southern corridor have been suspended due to the incident, with no timeline provided for the resumption of train services, according to 'El Pais'.
The company stated that it has activated all emergency protocols and is working closely with authorities to manage the situation. Renfe has also confirmed the suspension of railway services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia.
