The Grim Reality of Ethnic Violence in Manipur
In May 2023, Manipur witnessed a harrowing outbreak of ethnic violence, revealing a deeply painful reality. A report obtained through the Right to Information Act from the state's Home Department indicates that more than 700 individuals have lost their lives since the violence erupted, many of whom were residing in relief camps and temporary shelters.
This information was disclosed to RTI activist and political analyst Hareswar Goswami following directives from the Manipur Information Commission. According to official statistics, at least 731 displaced individuals have died in relief camps across nine districts of the state. Churachandpur district recorded the highest fatalities, with 248 deaths, followed by Bishnupur with 151, Kangpokpi with 128, Imphal West with 94, Kakching with 60, and Imphal East with 25. Additionally, 13 deaths were reported in Jiribam, 11 in Thoubal, and one in Tengnoupal.
Kangpokpi District Faces Severe Conditions
Even three years after the conflict began, normalcy remains elusive in Manipur. The RTI reveals that over 43,000 individuals are still compelled to live in relief camps and pre-fabricated homes. As of April 30, 2026, Kangpokpi district has the highest number of displaced persons, totaling 15,694. Bishnupur follows with 10,092, while Churachandpur has 6,365 individuals still residing in camps.
Incidents of Suicide and Drug Overdoses Reported
According to government documents, at least 25 unnatural deaths have been recorded in the relief camps and settlements. Churachandpur reported six such deaths, including four drowning incidents, one electrocution, and one case of sexual assault, for which an arrest has been made.
In Imphal West, four unnatural deaths were reported, comprising two suicides by hanging, one drug overdose, and one gunshot fatality. In response to these incidents, district authorities have initiated counseling and awareness programs in the camps.
Support Provided by Authorities
Families residing in relief camps are grappling with the pain of displacement alongside serious health challenges. Statistics reveal that 217 individuals in the camps of Imphal East are suffering from severe or incurable illnesses. Similarly, 41 in Imphal West and 26 in Bishnupur are battling similar health issues. District administrations have reported that essential services such as medical treatment, mental counseling, medications, wheelchairs, and financial assistance for surgeries are being provided to the ailing individuals.
