Update on Indian Nationals in Russian Military

New Delhi: The Indian government has confirmed that 26 citizens serving in the Russian military have died, with an additional seven individuals reported missing, as disclosed in Parliament on Thursday.

In a written statement to the Rajya Sabha, Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Minister of State for External Affairs, mentioned that efforts are underway to facilitate the early return of 50 individuals.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assisted in repatriating the remains of 10 deceased Indian nationals and has arranged for the local cremation of two others.

To aid in identifying the deceased, DNA samples from the families of 18 Indians reported dead or missing have been provided to Russian authorities.

The MEA was queried about the number of Indian nationals illegally working or coerced into service within the Russian Army, as well as the fatalities and missing persons since 2022.

Additionally, the government was asked about the current number of Indians believed to be trapped in the Russian military and the timeline of communications with Russia regarding their repatriation, including any delays in returning the remains of those killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

According to available data, 202 Indian nationals are thought to have been enlisted in the Russian armed forces. The government has successfully secured the early discharge of 119 individuals; however, 26 have reportedly died, and seven are missing, with efforts continuing for the release of 50 more.

The Indian Mission in Russia has provided support to those discharged from the military, including assistance with travel documents and air tickets as needed.

The mission has also played a role in the evacuation of mortal remains.

Once remains are moved to a secure location, the identification process involves matching DNA samples with relatives. Upon confirming identity, the Indian embassy helps finalize necessary documentation for local cremation or the transport of remains back to India, working closely with the families.

The government is in constant communication with Russian officials to ensure the safety and prompt discharge of all Indian nationals serving in the Russian armed forces.
