Fatal Lightning Strikes Reported in Odisha

Four individuals lost their lives and many others sustained serious injuries due to lightning strikes during thunderstorms on Sunday, as reported by officials.


In the Mayurbhanj district, a 26-year-old man tragically died while seeking refuge under a tree during a storm caused by Kalbaishakhi. The victim, Bhima Marndi, hailed from Bholagadia village in the Nishchinta panchayat, while another individual, Jagannath Marndi, aged 40, from Gohirapal village, was injured.


In Bargarh district, a 43-year-old man named Dhanasingh Chhatria was killed, and two others were critically hurt when lightning struck a banyan tree where they were taking shelter near farmland in Barapalia village, located in the Paikamal block.


Additionally, in Jagatsinghpur district, a 45-year-old house painter, Prasant Das, died, and another laborer was severely injured after lightning hit a passenger boat on the Mahanadi River close to Paradip. They were returning to Mahakalapara in Kendrapara district after completing their work at industrial sites.


In Keonjhar district, Shailendri Nayak, aged 54, was fatally struck by lightning in her backyard at Baunshuli village under the Patana block. She worked as a supervisor with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in Harichandanpur.
