Incident Overview

In Siddipet district, Telangana, a 23-year-old Dalit intern at a government medical college reportedly took her own life after being deceived by a senior resident doctor who had promised to marry her. According to police reports, the young woman was distressed after the accused refused to marry her, citing caste differences. On January 3, she injected herself with a herbicide in her college hostel, leading to her unconsciousness.


Medical Response

Authorities revealed that fellow students rushed her to a hospital, where she was initially treated in Siddipet before being transferred to a government facility in Hyderabad. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment in the early hours of January 4.


Legal Action

Following a complaint filed by the victim's sister, police arrested the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The victim hailed from a poor family in Jogulamba-Gadwal district and had completed her education at a social welfare school before enrolling in the Siddipet government medical college for her MBBS in 2020.


Background of the Victim

The police noted that the victim excelled in both academics and sports. Her parents are laborers, and her elder sister works as a software engineer. The intern had met the accused senior resident during her internship at the medical college, where he had initially promised to marry her but later retracted his commitment, citing caste as a reason.
