Tragic Suicide of Engineering Student in Chhattisgarh Raises Concerns Over Academic Pressure
Engineering Student Found Dead in Hostel
In a heartbreaking incident in Raigarh district, Chhattisgarh, a 20-year-old engineering student reportedly took her own life late Saturday night in her hostel room. The deceased has been identified as Prince Kumari, hailing from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. She was in her second year of a B.Tech program in Computer Science and resided in the university hostel near Punjipatra.
Police Investigation Underway
According to police reports, the student committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room. The authorities were alerted by hostel officials, prompting police to arrive at the scene, conduct an investigation, and send the body for a post-mortem examination. Subsequently, the remains were handed over to her family.
Academic Stress Cited as a Possible Factor
Initial findings suggest that the student was under significant academic pressure, as she was facing exams for her second year while also dealing with backlog papers from her first year. A suicide note was recovered from her room, and its contents are currently being examined by the police.
Family's Growing Concern
Sources indicate that Prince's family attempted to reach her multiple times via phone around 8:30 PM on Saturday but received no response. Concerned about her well-being, they contacted the hostel warden. Upon arrival, the warden found the door locked from the inside. After repeated knocking yielded no answer, she looked through the window and discovered the student hanging.
Suicide Note Reveals Emotional Struggles
The police reported that the suicide note expressed the student's feelings of inadequacy regarding her parents' expectations and her struggles with academic performance, as well as the financial burden on her family. In the note, she allegedly apologized to her parents, stating, "Sorry, Mom and Dad, I couldn't meet your expectations," and expressed regret for using their savings for her education.
Family's Financial Concerns
Family members revealed that Prince had backlog issues in five subjects during her first semester and was preparing for re-examinations. They also mentioned that she had recently requested approximately 1 lakh rupees in installments for her semester fees.
Ongoing Investigation
The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and statements from hostel residents and university staff are being recorded.
