Incident Overview

On Tuesday, a 26-year-old woman reportedly took her own life in Ambernath. Allegations have surfaced that her husband and in-laws subjected her to continuous physical and mental harassment over dowry demands. Following this tragic event, the Shivaji Nagar police in Ambernath arrested her husband, Dr. Nitin Tilkar, along with her mother-in-law Chhaya Tilkar and brother-in-law, on charges of dowry harassment and inciting suicide. Dr. Nitin, a BHMS doctor, practices in Ulhasnagar. The deceased has been identified as Vishakha Tilkar, a commerce graduate from Pune. She had an arranged marriage with Dr. Nitin on April 30. According to her family, no dowry was given to the groom's family at the time of the wedding. However, shortly after the marriage, her husband and in-laws began demanding 50 grams of gold from her parents.

Details of Harassment

In addition to the dowry demands, Vishakha's family was suspicious of her character, leading them to keep a close watch on her and isolate her from others. Her husband even installed CCTV cameras inside their home to monitor her every move and strictly forbade her from interacting with neighbors. On Sunday, when Vishakha was seen talking to a neighbor, her husband and in-laws brutally assaulted her.

Final Moments

Distressed by the attack, Vishakha reached out to her parents in Pune to share her ordeal. As her parents were planning to intervene and travel to Ambernath to confront her in-laws, Vishakha, unable to endure the ongoing humiliation and torment, tragically ended her life on Tuesday. Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Patil from Shivaji Nagar police station stated that the accused family had been harassing the victim both physically and mentally due to the absence of gifts during the wedding. Recently, they had escalated their demands for 50 grams of gold, which her father, a rickshaw driver in Pune, could not fulfill. The three accused have been arrested and will be presented in court today.
