Azamgarh, Sep 23: A man, identified as Arvind Singh, was fatally shot by police following a tense standoff in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh. He was accused of shooting his wife and two priests before taking his three children hostage.
Details of the Incident
The confrontation began on Tuesday evening when Arvind returned home around 6 p.m. and found his wife, Babita Singh, 32, engaged in a religious ceremony with two priests, Mahendra Pathak, 60, and Akhilesh Mishra, 50.
After expressing his discontent with the ritual, an argument ensued, leading Arvind to allegedly use his licensed firearm against his wife and the priests. He then locked himself and his three children in a room.
Police Response
Law enforcement arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate Arvind's surrender, but he refused, insisting that they wait until morning.
Naveen Arora, the Additional Director General of Police for the Varanasi Zone, stated that the police initially sought to de-escalate the situation without resorting to force.
After nearly seven hours, the situation escalated when Arvind reportedly fired shots from inside the house, prompting police to breach the premises using stun grenades and tear gas.
Aftermath and Investigation
During the police operation, all three children were rescued and taken to a hospital, where it was discovered that one boy had sustained a gunshot wound. Tragically, both Arvind and his son later died from their injuries.
Authorities are currently gathering evidence and interviewing family members and neighbors to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Initial findings suggest that Arvind had a history of aggressive behavior, with family members previously reporting his violent conduct.
It was revealed that the religious ceremony was organized by his mother and wife, who believed he was possessed by an evil spirit, hoping the ritual would help him. However, tensions escalated when Arvind objected to the proceedings.
Local residents reported that five priests had been present for the ceremony, with three managing to escape while the others were shot during the incident.
