Authorities Take Action Following Stampede
In the aftermath of the stampede, Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of key individuals involved, including representatives from RCB, the event organizers, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
Among those arrested was RCB's marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, who was apprehended at the airport while allegedly trying to flee to Mumbai. Additionally, three staff members from DNA Entertainment were taken into custody. A police officer had previously issued a warning regarding potential dangers, which went unaddressed.
Eyewitness Files Complaint Against RCB and KSCA
An eyewitness, Rolan Gomes, filed a First Information Report (FIR) against KSCA and RCB, citing negligence. His complaint highlighted that the rush for free tickets led to a dangerous crowd surge, with no preparations made to manage the situation.
BCCI's Response and Potential Consequences
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) described the stampede as "unfortunate," attributing it to the organizers' lack of foresight. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that while the event was private, the board is concerned about cricket's reputation. He noted that the T20 World Cup parade in Mumbai was well-coordinated, unlike the RCB event.
Saikia stated, "At some stage, BCCI will have to take action. We cannot remain passive. Although it was RCB's private event, we are responsible for cricket in India and will work to prevent such incidents in the future."
Calls for RCB's Suspension Grow
As investigations continue, some fans and analysts are advocating for RCB to face a ban for one or two seasons. While the BCCI has not confirmed any sanctions yet, if RCB is found culpable, significant measures may be taken to safeguard the league's integrity.
RCB's Commitment to Support Victims
RCB has pledged full cooperation with authorities and announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased. They also introduced a new fund, "RCB Cares," to assist those injured during the incident. Despite these efforts, concerns remain regarding the team's accountability in managing the event.
