An RCB supporter recounted how the chants for the team devolved into chaos: 'Inside, the seats are all full, and that's why they are not letting us in. We want to go back, but we are not allowed to. The gates are crowded with people; even if they open the gates, people will rush in, and many have been injured...'
Misjudgment by Authorities
Officials acknowledged that the actual turnout was at least three times higher than anticipated. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) also failed to predict the crowd size, with thousands arriving at three major metro stations: Vidhana Soudha, Cubbon Park, and MG Road. The trains were overcrowded, with passengers packed beyond capacity.
Following the stampede, metro services at these stations were halted to prevent further incidents.
Poor Planning for Victory Parade
The situation deteriorated due to miscommunication regarding a victory parade. Although police had advised against a procession between Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium, the team proceeded towards the stadium after an official ceremony. Many fans anticipated a victory ride and lined the route, but the parade was later canceled by the Karnataka Home Minister, a message that did not reach the public in time.
A senior official stated, 'The police couldn't control the crowd once the team started moving. It all happened in less than 15 minutes.'
Government Reactions and Accountability
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, confirming 11 fatalities and 33 injuries. He announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for each deceased victim and free medical care for the injured.
'This tragedy should not have occurred,' he remarked, adding that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered with a 15-day deadline. 'We will not defend this incident. Our government will not politicize this matter.'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as 'absolutely heartrending' and extended condolences to the victims' families, praying for the injured.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed his sorrow and called for enhanced safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Political Fallout and Criticism
Opposition parties criticized the Congress-led state government for its management of the event. BJP's CT Ravi labeled it 'a failure of governance.'
JD(S) leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy accused the government of 'zero preparedness' and 'desperate credit-seeking.'
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy held the government fully accountable, citing poor planning and failure to heed warnings.
BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla demanded the resignations of CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and the Home Minister, accusing them of insensitivity for continuing celebrations after the tragedy.
BCCI's Response to the Incident
In response to the stampede, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia called the incident 'very unfortunate,' highlighting the negative aspects of cricket's popularity. 'This is a downside of popularity. Fans are passionate about their cricketers. The organizers should have planned better,' he stated, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. Saikia emphasized that large-scale celebrations require improved safety protocols and coordination with local authorities, noting that similar events in Kolkata and Mumbai were managed without incident.
