Imphal, Apr 18: On Saturday, two individuals, including a former Army personnel, were fatally shot along National Highway-202 in Manipur when unidentified gunmen opened fire on vehicles traveling towards Ukhrul.
The victims have been identified as SW Chinaoshang (46), the son of late SW Ruichumhao, a resident of Tashar village and a retired member of the Naga Regiment, along with Yarungam Vashum from Kharasom. Both were from Ukhrul district and were en route from Imphal during the attack.
The shooting reportedly took place near T.M. Kasom village on the highway, with local sources indicating that at least three additional vehicles sustained damage from the gunfire.
Security personnel quickly arrived at the scene and initiated operations to locate the assailants.
While there are suspicions about the involvement of armed militants, officials have not yet released a formal statement confirming the identity of the attackers.
This incident follows closely after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh's visit to Ukhrul as part of his outreach efforts.
The situation has escalated tensions in the area, prompting increased security measures along vulnerable sections of the highway.
