Tragic Sequence of Events Unfolds After Bengaluru Woman's Death
A Disturbing Chain of Events
A series of tragic incidents has emerged from two states, beginning with the death of a 26-year-old woman in Bengaluru, who reportedly took her own life due to alleged harassment from her husband and in-laws. Following her suicide on Thursday, her husband also died, and her mother-in-law attempted to take her life in Nagpur. Protests erupted outside the husband's residence in Bengaluru, where the woman's parents and relatives demanded immediate arrests. According to police sources, she faced rejection and mistreatment from her husband's family, leading her to this desperate act. After a First Information Report (FIR) was filed post her death, her husband fled to Nagpur with his mother and brother. Tragically, he committed suicide in Nagpur the following day, while his mother attempted to end her life at a relative's home but was rescued and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
A Honeymoon Turned Sour
Reports indicate that a dispute regarding pre-marital friendships surfaced during their honeymoon in Sri Lanka, resulting in a dual tragedy for two families in Bengaluru. The couple, Ganvi and her husband Suraj Shivanna, both residents of Bengaluru, took their lives within days of each other. Following Ganvi's suicide and the ensuing chaos, 35-year-old Suraj fled Bengaluru with his family and ultimately took his life in a hotel room in Nagpur, approximately 1,000 kilometers away. He faced allegations of dowry harassment.
Family Tensions and Attempts at Reconciliation
Suraj's 60-year-old mother, Jayanti Shivanna, also attempted suicide but survived. Suraj and Ganvi were married on October 29 in Bengaluru. The newlyweds soon left for a ten-day honeymoon in Sri Lanka. However, the trip ended abruptly due to disputes over pre-marital friendships, leading to heated arguments and Ganvi expressing reluctance to continue the marriage. Upon returning to Bengaluru, attempts at reconciliation by family members failed. Suraj's elder brother, Sanjay Shivanna, stated that he tried to mediate, assuring the couple that the issues would be resolved, but they did not heed his advice.
Escalating Tensions and Violence
After returning home, Ganvi moved to her father's house, where she tragically took her life hours later. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved. Her family accused Suraj and his relatives of torturing her for dowry, prompting Bengaluru police to file a case against him for dowry harassment and abetment of suicide. The woman's family also staged protests demanding strict action against those responsible.
Fleeing from Accusations
In the wake of the two deaths, accusations flew between the families. According to Sanjay, the situation placed immense pressure on their family. He recounted that around 30 individuals stormed their home in Vijayanagar, searching for Suraj, whose name was mentioned in the FIR for dowry harassment. Feeling threatened, they felt they had no choice but to flee Bengaluru. Sanjay denied the dowry allegations, stating they had not made any demands and had covered all wedding expenses. He claimed that Ganvi's family had begun threatening them instead.
Tragic End in Nagpur
On December 23, Suraj, his mother Jayanti, and brother Sanjay moved to Hyderabad, then continued to Nagpur. They booked two hotel rooms within the jurisdiction of the Songaon police station. The tragic incident occurred shortly after midnight. According to the FIR, Suraj hanged himself from the ceiling fan using a dupatta. His mother discovered him around 12:30 AM. In shock, Jayanti attempted to take her own life but survived when the noose broke. She alerted hotel staff and Sanjay, who notified the police. Suraj was rushed to AIIMS Nagpur, where he was pronounced dead around 3 AM. Senior Inspector Nitin Magar from Songaon police station confirmed the details, stating that Jayanti was hospitalized but is now out of danger.
Ongoing Investigation
The Nagpur police have registered a case regarding the deaths and are coordinating with Bengaluru police, where the abetment case related to Ganvi's death is still pending. They await the autopsy report for Suraj to rule out any foul play. This tragic narrative began with a marriage that lasted barely six weeks and culminated in two deaths, leaving both families in mourning and prompting an investigation that spans multiple states.
