Tragic Runway Collision at LaGuardia Airport Claims Lives of Two Pilots
Details of the Incident
The recent runway accident at LaGuardia Airport has resulted in the tragic deaths of two pilots, with the second identified as MacKenzie Gunther, according to reports from a Canadian news outlet. Gunther served as the First Officer on an Air Canada Express flight that collided with a firefighting vehicle during its landing late Sunday night. The other deceased pilot, Antoine Forest, was previously confirmed to be from Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec.
The aircraft involved was a CRJ-900, operated by Jazz Aviation for Air Canada, which was en route from Montreal to New York, carrying 72 passengers along with four crew members at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that the plane struck a Port Authority fire truck on the runway as it was landing. Audio from air traffic control revealed that the fire truck had received clearance to cross the runway shortly before the collision occurred. Following the incident, a controller was heard expressing regret, stating, 'I messed up,' which suggests a potential lapse in communication.
As a result of the crash, 41 individuals, including passengers and crew, were transported to hospitals, with nine still undergoing treatment for their injuries, some of which are reported to be serious. This incident is still developing.
